Praggnanandhaa won the prestigious title by clinching a thrilling title victory against World Champion D Gukesh in a dramatic final of the Tata Steel Masters 2025.

Dommaraju Gukesh was one of the strong favourites to win the Tata Steel Masters title, given that he recently became the youngest world chess champion and was in an exceptional form throughout the tournament.

Teenage sensation R Praggnanandhaa emerges as India's top contender in the highly anticipated FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament, joined by fellow compatriots D Gukesh and Vidit Gujrathi.

"Chess prodigy and our number-one ranked player Praggnanandhaa put up a stiff fight against the reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsson in 2023. Today, India has over 80 chess grandmasters compared to little over 20 in 2010," said FM Nirmala Sitharaman during her Interim Budget 2024 speech.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Praggnanandhaa and his parents on Thursday to congratulate them on his achievement. "You personify passion and perseverance," Modi said, adding, "Your example shows how India's youth can conquer any domain."

FIDE World Cup:Praggnanandhaa's journey to the final included victories over world number 3 Hikaru Nakamura (2-0 in tiebreaks) and world number 2 Fabiano Caruana (2.5-1.5 in tiebreaks). The final tiebreaker promises to be intriguing, particularly as it will be played in a shorter format.

R Praggnanandhaa was participating in the 2022 FTX Crypto Cup. In the final round, he convincingly defeated world number one Magnus Carlsen. However, he missed out on the top prize, finishing second overall.

World Champion Magnus Carlsen was recently beaten by Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa. Now, legendary Viswanathan Anand has defeated the champion too.
